Bardia National Park
Located in the Midwestern region of Nepal and east of the
Karnali River this is largest undisturbed wilderness area in
the Nepalese Terai. In 1988 its status was proclaimed to
ensure the survival of the tiger and its prey species in
order to conserve the representative ecosystem of the
midwest Terai. The park sprawls over 1868 km˛ and sits at
the foot of the Chure Hills (Siwalik range). The scenic
Babai river flows through it and the Geruwa, a tributary of
the Karnali, flows at the western edge.
Bardia National Park is situated 600 km from
Kathmandu and the journey by air takes 1 hour and 10
minutes, followed by a short journey by road. It is one of
the few places for the Swamp Deer or Barasingha. Even
Blackbuck are found in reasonable numbers and can frequently
be sighted at Baghaura Phanta.
Here is one of the best habitats for tiger and one of the
finest places to view them in the wild. Other animals that
inhabit the area are wild elephant, Gharial, Marsh Muggar
crocodile, Gangetic dolphin, leopard, civets, Rhesus and
Langur monkeys, Nilgai and varieties of deer. The Asian
One-horned Rhino has been rehabilitated here from the Chitwan National Park.
Included in the rich selection of birdlife are the rare
Lesser and Bengal Floricans, Silver-eared Mesia, herons (5
species), egrets (4 species) and many others. Authorities
claim the reserve has an old bull elephant which is the
largest of all surviving Asiatic Wild Elephant (Elephus
maximus) and which has a height of almost four metres.
Observation of wild animals is done on elephant back or in
suitable vehicles and the Karnali River provides excellent
fishing for Mahaseer. Other activities include rafting on
the Karnali, Babai and nearby Bheri rivers.
