Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve
Located in the far west Terai of Nepal this reserve was
set up in 1976, is 3055 sq kms. and its purpose is mainly to
give protection to the endangered Swamp Deer (Cervus
duvaucelli). The extensive grasslands, wetland and a wide
variety of fores t vegetation also provide shelter to many
other interesting animals. Small but little explored this
reserve has lots to offer. After January, when the grasses
are seasonally burnt you will be able view almost the entire Sukila Phanta - the largest grassland area of Nepal. Here is
where you will find the biggest congregation of Swa mp Deer,
additionally this area also contains the biggest numbers of
the globally threatened Bengal Florican. Because this
grassland area is so vast there are many opportunities to
discover new wildlife and the chance to visit the small
ox-bow lake Rani Tal which contains various bird species
both migrant and resident.
